| I am starting to see that with both the elves. Very tricky indeed, but I am a huge fan. |

Initially, I didn't consider them a race, as the bulk of them is made out of followers. But upon re-reading the rulebook I must admit that the core of eldarim is actually a separate race (Also, it look rather odd that the dragoncrusader finds no mention in their introductory text). So they should be in my list.
But they are not. I simply don't like them all that much. I thoroughly dislike the acolytes for not being nice to look at at all. The champions are ok-ish, but in the end they just don't cut it for me. I feel like both the champions and the acolytes don't connect to the rest of the game that much. Somehow they lack that bit of character the other races do have. Add to that some technical in-game dislikes, and all of a sudden I find myself conveniently forgetting the eldarim.
However, if I should rate them anyways, I'd probably put them up pretty high. The champions are seriously powerful, and the acolytes are quite focused in unusuald ways.
In fact, the race could be compared to undead. They relate to undead in the fact that they have a rather unorthodox global army composition that allows for really specialized armies. Not only that but their magic is as one-sided as that of the undead. They lack magical diversity, but make up for it in not having to compromise.
So if I'd have to give them a position, it would probably be around #3.5.
(A not-really-related-issue I found during my little excursion into the rules of the eldarim is that the wording on rise of the eldarim is pretty odd. First of all it targets 'units', in the first sentence, then 'unit' in the second. Second, it recruits rather than adds, which is useful in distinguishing the action from promoting, but makes little sense compared to the normal resurrection spells.)

Haha I actually fully agree w/Funky on every point of the Eldarim. I just think they are a fluke of the game that I always look over. I tried to use em a couple of times even once recently and I dont enjoying adding them, I strongly dislike the invention of the lords/masters/hunters/slayers for many a reason, one being they replaced monsters on a large scale, not 100% but a massive chunk of it. Over powered and a sorry attempt at limiting them.
Yes, definitately, focus wise there is no comparison but they altered things a smidge in my opinion, and I just dont feel any other related expansion did that. |

To each his own. Not every race can appeal to every player and I wouldn't try. I think people should have their favorites.
I will just point out that the Lord and Slayer were part of the original submitted design before the first die was printed back in... 93? 94?
So they are not a new concept, they've been around for many a year. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |
