My buddy and I have been playing with an interesting army construction schema as of late - 48 point armies, with a requirement of 12 points of melee units, 12 points of missile units, 12 points of cavalry units, and 12 points of magic units.
It pretty much invalidates some one-race armies - all undead is pretty much out of the picture as they don't have cavalry. Or missile. But there are enough "undead compatible" races to make up for it. And this way, you generally can't be outfoxed by someone who focuses too much on one type of die.
It makes for interesting, more "well-rounded" games, and it evens the playing field a bit.
Like last night, for instance, my opponent started using amazons for his missile faction. He'd whole up in reserves and start missiling me from there. So I included lots of swamp stalkers - whenever he'd hit reserves and start missiling them, I'd just have them mutate his amazons away.

I always try to create a very well balanced army!
The Problem is that if you fight against a "specialized army", you just can't get enough of the required icons.
On the other hand: You're not depending on the terrain symbols.
Start at a highland standing stones rolled to 1 in the beginning of the game and sit there with a missile army! Hmmmmmm.....! Just IDs possible!
I still don't know what to prefer! Specialized or well balanced??? _________________

I've done something similar with what we call "regiments." A regiment is an 12h grouping of a single race and type, such as Dwarven Infantry or Scalder Missile. A regiment is made up of 1 rare, 2 uncommon, and 5 common of that race & type. The biggest advantage to regiments is that you can create them and leave them in a box, then pull 2 or 3 together to make an instant, ready-to-go army. The biggest problem is if you want to make a 1/2 magic army in a 36 pt game, since these are all 12h, but all players work under the same limitation. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Ooh, I like that. That will really appeal to my opponent's propensity for war games. I'm going to propose we further delineate our armies using that format.
