Okay, Dragons are attacking me. I roll for saves, and get a cantrip. Am I able to use the spell points for some magical protection?
Joe is certain he read in the new rules, "Something about that," but cannot remember it exactly.
Help!

Yes, you can use Cantrip points to cast protective spells, depending on your color(s). Spells like Wall of Ice, Stoneskin, and the ever-useful Summon Dragonkin can provide saves (and in the case of the kin, an extra health to soak up damage). _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

The general way to look at it is that it is the same as any other save roll; so it depends on what you mean by "magical protection". As long as you're talking about spells that increase the saves you get or move units, then yes that's perfectly legal. You can also cast spells that would increase the amount of damage you are doing to the dragon so that you could kill it. However if you're trying to cast a spell that changes any of the results that have already been counted, you can't do that. (Off the top of my head I can't think of which ones would fall in this category during a dragon attack.) _________________ John Koslow |

If you get 2 Cantrips of the right color, you might think that you could cast a Summon Dragon, and move the dragon to another terrain. Well you can do that, but the damage the dragon inflicted still is there. Worse yet, if you move the dragon to a terrain where you have an army, and that army has not had a dragon attack yet, then the new dragon will attack. Other than Summon Dragon, no spell affects a dragon directly. You can cast spells that help you cause more damage (like Burning Hands), or give you more saves (like Stone Skin). But you can't change the dragon's results. Nor can a Cantrip help you escape a dragon's breath. For example if the only unit you had was a Goblin Death Mage, and a dragon rolled a breath that allows a save, you could not Path the Death Mage away and live. It's dead. On the other hand, if that same dragon rolled Jaws instead, and during your save roll you got a Cantrip, you could cast a Path and escape. The difference? Breath affects individual units, Jaws affects an army. A unit can't escape any spell or SAI that targets it by moving. A unit can leave an army to escape damage. _________________ You can never have too many dice.
