well, I don't know their value - it's too high to bother for me anyway - but here in Italy that game has never arrived, probably you - in the USA - have seen more copies of it (mainly those who have the catchy starters and boosters have found them in super-offer somewhere...)
on the other hand, if you plan to get rid of them, I'll wait and see... |

| not everyone. I never saw the expansions, but then my local game store wasn't very big. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

I was out of there when it got to $10!
Once I saw the bid escalate I took a closer look at the picture and saw what everyone was so excited about. |

Right... so i need some confirmation that either this person got all ka-razy up in the bidding war or they got some deal since its a first edition ormyrr...
Quite honestly I think They ka-razy. |

Quite honestly I think They ka-razy. |
Chances are, if someone is crazy enough to bid so much for an item, he's also crazy enough to read the forums once in a while. Let's not also forget that it actually takes at least two crazy people to drive an auction up, as a certain unseelie faerie owner can tell you.
I'm the ka-razy person who bought that Ormyrr.
That auction actually connects back to a prior auction that listed an Ormyrr and a few other rare monsters. That ebay auction can be found here: Auction 1
It turns out, the lot had no Ormyrr, not even any Death Nagas, despite them being in the auction description. The rare dice listed were simply not in the package she sent. In their place were other dice. I have thousands of dragon dice already, so these other dice were essentially no value to me.
In reading back over the contents of that auction, it became clear to me that she had misread the instruction booklets and used the wrong names. She used the names below the icon rather than above them. So what she labeled an Ormyrr was in fact a Mudman. What she labeled a Swamp Giant was in fact a Swamp Beast, and so on. What's odd, though, is that she got many other names right, so I don't know what was going on.
She was unwilling to admit her mistake, and thus the auction is working its way through the conflict resolution stage. If I get a refund, I'll be amazed, since it's my word against hers, but who knows.
So then a few weeks later, the other auction went up on eBay. This time, there was photographic proof that an Ormyrr was present. In retrospect, I should have asked for such proof in auction 1, but I was too trusting. From now on, I'll insist on confirmation before buying expensive dice.
In both auctions, the significant bulk of the perceived value came from the Ormyrr. In the first, it had a bunch of other dice that helped sweeten the deal and increase the price a little, but it was the Ormyrr I wanted. The second auction helped me come to peace with the dissatisfaction with the first.
It's worth pointing out that the second place bidders on both auctions (who drove my ultimate bids so high) are different people. So that's at least three crazy people.
In the end, I'm content having paid the $138 for an Ormyrr still in its plastic baggie (the condition doesn't get any more "mint" than that). My hope is to be able to trade a TSR Ormyrr in a straight exchange for an SFR Ormyrr. If anyone is interested, just let me know.
As for Unseelie Faeries, which is how this thread started, if someone puts up a TSR UF in mint condition, I'll pay the $1,000. As someone who's still stinging from coming in second on the last TSR UF auction, and who has spent over a decade looking for this single die, I can say the $1,000 will make it worth it to me.
It may not be worth it to someone else, but that doesn't make me crazy. It just means I'm lucky to be able to pay the price for it. |

i honestly was just wondering if the ormyrr was actually worth that much. i have a silly way of saying what i mean sometimes. i mean i would like to buy a new car but i don't need one that badly. if i think that they are asking way too much for the price of the car "i'm out". i was posting cuz i wanted to know if i should have stuck with that auction longer cuz it was worth so much more that i thought.
after hearing your story G.H. i get that it was a must buy for you-- im just wondering why the other person bidding against you wouldnt relinquish it earlier based on my small knowledge of what the dice are worth. like i said i was out at 60$ with the shipping. i can only go off of what chuck pints point table tells me the worth of these dice anyway.
since i wrote that ka-razy statement i thought i'd also publicly apoligize to you if you took offense to that. i just really meant that that auction got "too rich for my blood" and i couldn't hang with the big boys.
now that person that keeps trying to sell a handful of 10 dragonkin in an auction for 40$.... (is a little ka-razy lol) when you can buy them at the sfr store for super much less. (and there isn't even a champion in the lot!)
anyway it does make me scratch my head and wonder what are the true value of these particular dice... UFs and Bearhuggers and whatnot... originals vs. reprints and such.
Roll to victory George, and glad you finally got yours! and yes that ebay resolution center madness from the first auctin is super headache-y i feel for ya. |

If you get that deal, I'd have to say you got off cheap! Of course, I don't mind if people think I am ka-razy! _________________ Shoe |

Thanks, Evylution. I wasn't offended; I just wanted to explain the story behind the auction. Many times the back-stories are as interesting as the dice.
For example, I was the second-place bidder on that TSR Unseelie that went for over $1300. In the closing seconds of that auction the two of us, at what must have been the exact moment, entered our bids. I entered my birthday: $1215.68.
The other bidder entered a number bigger than my birthday.
This happened so quickly that eBay initially thought I had won the auction at a much lower value; $551.
Thrilled, I went to go make payment arrangements, and the ending price was much higher. At first I was confused, believing eBay was trying to charge me for my full bid. Then the sad reality set in.
And so that's a piece of the story about how TSR Unseelie Faeries have come to have a value at around $1,000 (or more). Given how few of these dice find their way to sale, it's unlikely it will change any time soon.
In the hours immediately following that auction, others called the final value for that "crazy", too. It's no crazier than a painting going for millions of dollars. It's all in the value our hearts place on these things. Happily, Dragon Dice has a special place in the heart for many of us. That's unlikely to change any time soon, either. |
