Howdy Folks I have a question that has probably been asked a million times but if you will humor me.

My friend and I have been playing Dragon Dice pretty seriously for a while now and we are going to Dreamation this year with the intent of playing yet more dragon dice and competing in the DD tournament.

Well I am a gaming con vet (though not for DD) and my buddy in a Con virgin. And quite honestly with all of our rules argument theory hammering and house ruling I'm thinking we could probably use some advice prior to jumping up on the stage.

So, finally, to the point: does any one have any general advice on playing/ list building/ preparing for a competitive DD event?

Basically I'm looking for general pointers and advice, things to bone up on, peripherals to have and avoid, and alittle army building theory wouldn't hurt.

Neither of us are particularly sure what army we'll use between us we have a decent collection of every army.

He prefers undead, scalder, and firewalkers

I prefer Frostwing, Treefolk, and Lava elves

Anything would be helpful, fire away.

Take a look at the Dragon Dice events offered at DREAMATION (which are listed in the Conventions forum). For the ones you are interested in, check to see that you can meet the army construction requirements. There are Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced events, which may influence your decisions on which ones to play in. Advanced events permit Dragonkin, minor terrains, the new Battlefield terrains, and promotional dice, so you can consider using them if you have these dice, but none of these are required - so don't be dissuaded from playing in such an event if you don't have any of these dice.

For things to consider when constructing your army for a "Single Race" event, check out the "Introductions" for your favorite races in the Strategy forum. I will have summary sheets for each race available that include spells and SAI descriptions.

The Dragon Dice events at DREAMATION should be located in the hotel's main lobby, opposite the front desk.

Most events are 1-on-1 games, which most players are accustomed to. A multi-player game has some twists to it that can catch a first-time player off-guard, but they can be a lot of fun.

I look forward to meeting you at DREAMATION. Wink

I suggest copying an army that won.
The reason is because an army that won is usually one that works well with the tournament.

ie...

it works well in a timed event...

I placed second in the worlds with a copy army...slightly tweaked...
and I just wanted to see how far I could go with the army.

So if you use a copy army...
then you have half the battle won already. Wink

Creating a cheat-sheet to bring along is something some players find useful. A small piece of paper with things that you tend to make mistakes at can help with taking your mind off them and allowing it to focus on more important matters, like winning.

In general, I think one of the most important things to do when preparing for a tournament is making sure you've got enough to drink and eat. When I play in tournaments, my body tends to shift into overdrive, making me burn though both water and food very fast. You don't want to lose the late and most important games in the tournament because of a splitting headache from drinking too little, or losing concentration because you didn't have enough to eat. I had both happen to me several times.

Also, play the army you bring along at least several times, and know what your plan is in certain circumstances. It's really easy to lose sight of your plans as soon as the opponent shows his dice, but sticking to it can make a tremendous difference. Things you'll roughly want to plan ahead are: what do I want my army to do; (what do I expect most of my opponents to do); knowing this, what does my army need to do in order to fulfil its goals; where do I want to position; what do I want to do/achieve in the first few turns; how do I alter my plan against opposing armies that do a certain thing better than me... (Or simply play the army a few times to get a good feeling for it Smile )
