Okay, here's some example scenarios. In each, Player A is making a melee attack against Player B, with an army consisting of two four-health units that each generated 4 normal melee results, and Player B has a single Dragoncrusader that rolls Bash.
Scenario 1: The terrain is at face 7. There are seven Ash Storms on the terrain, so Player B is saving against 1 damage. Does Bash deal 1 damage back, or 4?
Scenario 2: Same situation as Scenario 1, except both attacking units have Burning Hands cast on them. How much damage is being saved against? How much damage can Bash block and deal back?
Scenario 3: The terrain is at an 8th face owned by the defending player. Does the Dragoncrusader survive? |

1) There are 4 points of damage from the unit. The fact that the army has most of it's damage reduced is besides the point. So the unit (whichever is picked) takes 4 points of damage. The interesting thing, is that the defending army gets 4 saves, and since they are SAI-generated, they don't get reduced by the Ash Storms.
2) Both units double their damage before army effects happen. So they each generate 8 points. The army total is reduced to 9. But the Bash does 8 points back at a unit, and generates 8 saves.
3) This is nearly a moot point, as you can see above, in both cases the Dragoncrusader survives. But I assume you are asking if the Dragoncrusader's saves double. Which they do.
There are 2 key things here: First, Bash does back damage equal to what the unit generates. So it really doesn't matter what happens to those results because of army modifiers. Second, Bash's save results are SAI-generated but otherwise normal army results. So the save results are modified the same way any other SAI-generated saves would be modified. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

This scenario came up at GenCon 2014:
An army of magicians conducts a melee action with a Necromantic Wave in effect. Some of the magicians roll normal magic icons, which get converted to melee results by the Necromantic Wave spell. A Bash SAI is rolled during the save roll. Can the Bash SAI target a magician that rolled magic normal action icons that were then converted to melee results?
The answer is: No
Bash: Normel (non-melee save); Special (dragon attack or save against melee attack) During a non-melee save roll, Bash generates save results equal to the die's health. During a save roll. Against a melee attack, choose a die in the attacking army that generated normal melee results. Bash immediately does back damage equal to the melee results of the target unit, which must generate saves against its own damage. The defending army gets saves equal to the amount of damage that the target unit generated. During a dragon attack, target one dragon that did normal damage. Bash immediately does back damage equal to the melee results of the target dragon. The defending army gets saves equal to the amount of damage that the target dragon generated.
The magicians in the attacking army that rolled magic normal action icons cannot be targeted by Bash, because the unit did not generate melee results. (The magic results get converted to melee results by Necromantic Wave as an army effect.) Magician dice that rolled an ID icon or melee normal action icons could be targeted by Bash. _________________ Daniel Burkley
