As for the support for your army: how about Scalder mages with a dash of treefolk? The Treefolk allow you to cast Call Water, enabling you to use water walking. You've got TRtM as well, plus plenty of spells to keep you alive. The only thing they lack is a direct damage spell, but dragons should do well enough as a substitute.

I was worried about the Call Water / Tidal Wave / Volcanic Eruption combo. I figured if I joined you, you wouldn't cast it...OOPS! 
I guess I could try treefolk. I only own about 6 points worth of Treefolk mages though. I try not to play online with anything I don't own.
Yes a few day break is a good idea. I've already got my army ready....and it's ugly!

If I would go that route, I would either have to find a way to cast call water before taking my magic action, or wait a turn, because of the targeting restrictions for Tidal Wave at the time of the announcement. In the latter case you'd have plenty chances to either alter the terrain or simply run away.
My mind is already swimming with options, I hope I can create something as ugly as you.

OK the army I finally settled on isn't near as ugly as it was going to be. It's still ugly, but more of a fun ugly.
