If the 3 maneuvers for the Eagle Knight is from it's Fly icons, then the Transmute Rock to Mud does not affect it. Given that those are the only maneuver faces on it (other than the ID which wouldn't be affected either), the Eagle Knight is still there. So you may need to back up here...

Thanks for trying to give me hope Chuck, but alas it wasn't meant to be!

I think this was by far the fastest online game I've ever played though!
I would like to try that army again sometime though. In theory I think it's got lots of potential.

Given the high numbers on the terrains, rather than Lightning Strikes, I would have done a bunch of Wind Walks, Watery Doubles, and Walls of Ice. That would have given you the saves and the maneuvers you needed to push that terrain up fast.

Yeah I was debating between that and what I did. The lightning strike was just to pull the unicorn out of the game for a maneuver turn so I wouldn't of had to worry about teleport. If I could have pulled off the Flash Flood though I would have been in a pretty decent spot. It would have left the unicorn / medallion / Dryads with nothing to do for at least 1 turn (unless he rolled magic with a minor) and I could have then shifted my attention to my home. I would have had the upper hand with what I had over there vs. what he had. I really like the Coral Elf magic choices. But once again hindsight is 20/20.

With the 20 magic I almost went with Wind Walk x 2 and Watery Double x 6. I was just more in a high risk / high reward kind of mood at the time I guess.

Edit -
I also really didn't want him TRtM me since my army is based quite a bit on my maneuvers = saves. Plus TRtM / Flash Flood / Wall of Thorns / Ash Storm would be nasty on me since my melee isn't all that great. That's why I leaned more towards the decision I made to keep him off the magic face.

How would you feel about doing a re-match? I get the impression we'd both like to see our forces in action a bit more, and I'm also quite sure this match could have been more interesting without the weird rolls. If we start off from the horde roll we could get a whole different game with exactly the same starting conditions. However, if you feel like using or facing something else then that's ok as well.

Let me think on that a bit. Problem is I've got so many other armies I want to try!! Very Happy

The only criticism I have...

You chose a coastland grove where you clearly wanted to start your mages on. I mean I see the point of a really high chance of magic, but this would be a serious hindrance.

I suppose what I am saying... If you chose a regular coastland and did not get magic, Coral Elf mages are still HIGHLY effective from reserves. Probably the most effective race in reserves, where you would not be able to double anyway.

I'm confused. So you're saying I should have started my mages in reserves?

Funky, you should start two new simultaneous games. I won't play as well as MM, but I'll try out the same army, and then MM can try out another army in the second game. Very Happy

I'd be up for a multi-player game for a change of pace or even more for a team game since I've never played one and don't want to let my partner Willy down in the online tourney coming up in June.

Ooh! Nice idea! I'm all for it! I suppose a team game is possible, but an ordinary multiplayer will probably be easier to organize. I'll happily play either though. I'd also like to volunteer as board-keeper, keeping boards is fun!

Not exactly. What I think you brought the grove for was a high chance of getting a magic face, however you cannot double. If you brought a standard coastland with a 1 magic face, your chances would have been lower, but you could double.

Since you would not be able to double from reserves anyway, bring the standard coastland and if you did not get magic, which chances are quite high, then just stick your mages in reserves and your situation would not have changed. Except you could not have done lightning strikes but thats not really an issue when just racing to an 8th face.

Hmm, I see you point, but then I lost a pretty decent chance of casting anything my first turn. I also lose the chance of casting Wall of Fog / Flash Flood which is a big help when racing to an 8th. (granted they don't have a unicorn....have I ever mentioned how much I don't like those....)

If you'd take a non-grove frontier, I think the best option would be the vortex, as it has an additional magic face. Still, the grove serves a dual purpose: not only does it provide a reliable means of getting some magic on the first turn (which isn't the most important part) but its also a way of keeping the mages safe from harm. The many magic faces on the terrain mean that the only thing those mages really need to fear are other mages and ranged (including mages) units at the opponents home.
Another positive side of the grove is that it doesn't offer a great late-game 8th face. And since the coral elves weren't planning on taking it first anyways, which leaves them with slightly less to worry about while capturing their own home.

Dial, your a good man. Thank you for pointing out the vortex. Yes it has 2 magic faces very true.
