Greetings to all you Forumites... Forumers... For.... people out there!
Joe & Steve reporting semi-live from the big convention of the year. Long drive for both parties (10 hours for Steve & Co, 19 for Joe and crew), and miserably hot and muggy. The Brauns were actually more refreshed, having arrived a day early and gotten a full night of sleep, whereas Joe and his vanload got little sleep and passed the night with bad jokes and Starbucks mochas, arriving just before lunch Colombus time.
Steve said to tell everyone, "Hi!" Actually, Steve says, "Ha ha ha, I'm here and you're not," but we'll just say that he said, "Hi!"
Arrived too late to play the Novice tournament (we stopped at the hotel to shower first), but we did get in on the single race competition. I won't go into a lot of detail, but Robert Braun (Destroyer) took first, and Chris (RockyMtnGamer), ended up with Second. Well done to both players!
We're all looking forward to getting an early start gaming and for tomorrow's competitions. We'll add to this topic daily for the duration of the con, thanks to Chris' laptop. Until tomorrow!
(Hey, Dieter, take care of our world while we're out and about! And all of you watch for the continuation of Chguck's adventures when we return. Being FTF at last leads to some long and hilarious sessions of what to do to the little guy next. Can you say, neutered with the Spoon, boys and girls?) _________________ The Maj

We had fun, cause we're at Origins and you're not.
Since no one bothered to read the first Origins report, why should we bother to give you more information? _________________ The Maj

I DID! I was just so overwhelmed by the heavy weight of that responsibility to take care of your world that I couldn't answer! How could ANYBODY ever take care of your world when you're gone?? We miss you here in the forum! Please go ahead with your reports, we really wanna know what's going on there! (Well, I can't speak for the others, but I DO!!)
Enjoy your time there and don't forget the photos _________________

Actually, Steve and I both modeled the thing and those pics will be available at makeyapuke.com shortly.
Okay, to recap yesterday...
It went by way too fast. Where did the day go? Steve and his boys started early with a Redemption tourney (Steve beat a bunch of kids again, showing all how to put the younger generation in their place).
During that time, Chris (RockyMtnGamer), Jake (Magic2Slay) and I played in Intermediate Constructed (24h, no MS), and got to meet and play against Steve (Wuxia) who was there as well.
Jake played a FR/CE/UD army, Chris used the unusual combo of TR/LE, Steve played an all Dwarves army, and I shot up the battlefields using an FR/AM mix. Sensing weakness, I placed no magic units in my army. This proved to be effective. Missiles were everywhere and thick, and my wins were all through attrition. Grabbed my first 1st. Chris battled well and snagged 2nd.
A quick lunch break and we went back for NO MAGICIANS (36h, no magic units at all, no MS), something I've never really played before. This was a maddeningly long series of battles. After seeing how well the FR/AM setup played, I went with that again. First game saw the same result as they shot up the battlefield.
Robert Braun (Destroyer) used an 36h all Goblin Pelter army which was able to shower his opponents with missiles. He pulled a victory through attrition, despite brother Jon's three Trolls regenerating like crazy.
Finals saw myself, Robert and Jonathan Braun (two Goblin armies against my FR/AM), going head to head to head. I figured I was toast, but managed to secure the frontier, giving me a slight edge. Pelters did what they do best and pelted the snot out of anyone in range. I quickly backed off (since Rob held the Frontier), to recoup some units, but Jon stood up to the onslaught at home and got pincushioned, losing most of his army in the process. He went to reserves to get them back. Rob pulled a few into reserves to try and get back the few units I'd managed to shoot from reserves, but left the majority of his forces at the Frontier. Jon regenerated his entire army. He sent them to the Frontier, survived a surprisingly weak missile attack, moved it to a melee face, and hit the Pelters hard! This allowed me to throw missiles at Rob from reserves and knock him out of the game. I sent my units home (playing Canadian, eh?), grabbed the 8th face (flatlands), and on the next turn eliminated the rest of Jon's units with a massive missile attack.
I was never so relieved to see a game end especially sinceI had needed to take a bathroom break about halfway through the game and was squirming pretty bad by game's end. Grabbed my Award Certificate and prize dice from Mike and ran to the can.
We spent the rest of the evening back at the hotel playing a variety of games including Chaos Progenitus (now known as Demon Dice) and Mag-Blast before finally succumbing to sleep about 1:30am.
All in all, a great Friday at Origins. Lots of laughs, lots of great games, and of course, a lot of fun just hanging out together.
As this report is written, Mike D. is demoing a game behind me while I watch over the Novice II playoffs between Jake and Chris (Chris just won the first, and the best of 3 will win). Battlefest (60h, MS allowed) starts at 5pm, so I'm also trying to figure out what to play for that. I'm anticipating a loooooong set of games.
Saturday is going by much like Friday. Too fast. All too soon it will be time to go home. Until then, we're going to do our bext to enjoy the rest of our time here.
Watch for today's report, which I'll try to get in sometime before we leave.
Now, back to the gaming! _________________ The Maj

Wish you were here at Origins! There is hardly any competition here and Colorado Springs is sweeping the Awards. Too bad for you!! Anyway, all gloating aside, here's to us having one last day of fun. |

Tried it several times to no avail. Looks like we go home after all.
The Championship format tourney is about to begin, and after that the boys from the mountains are heading home with 19 hours of highway driving before them.
Steve, Robert and Jonathan have already taken off, and are hearts are heavy at their departure. The weekend flew by it seems, and friendships that for many years now have been strictly online are now solidified by a long delayed time together face to face (not to mention sleeping in the same room, which is quite an experience, pictures to be posted soon).
I'll be posting recaps for Saturday's tournament games and the Chill Wind Campaign game we managed to squeeze in once I'm home and recovered from the trip. We also have some great pictures of our time at Origins that will be posted to Steve's site and the CSDDG's Meetup site.
Until then, keep 'em rolling!

Just a quick note to say thanks to Mike for running all the events this year at Origins. Great Job!
I had a great time playing in 3 of the tournaments. Thanks to everyone for helping me along with rules and some strategy. The more I played the more I realized how construction of armies and strategy make for an outstanding game. It is never the same game twice.
You guys are very fun to be around and made the gaming very enjoyable. Thanks.
It's nice to be able to put a face and voice to these forum names.
Fortunately, I never saw a thong. The moonrise in Columbus however is another story |

Whoa! In defense of my family's honor, I must state that Robert WON the Single Race event with his Undead army (or, as it was called that night, his @(*#$^& Undead army), and Jonathan took second in No Magicians with his Leopard Rider/Troll army (that, in Battlefest form, might have given Dad a shot had he not seriously blown his timing). As for me, well, a first and a second in two Redemption CCG events with their prizes salved my wounds from some wretched DD games. (The only good dragon rolls anyone had all weekend were against me, and I had to roll them against myself in one game!) _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Did I fail to mention that in my recap? Shame on me! I'll slap Chris upside the head for impertinance next time I see him. Folks, that was one bad army. He tore me up in record time. I think the game went four rounds in all. Lesson learned.

That was a wicked army, and shame on you for giving him the idea.

I didn't get to see much of that one, but I hear it was a nasty battle. Too bad Steve (Wuxia) couldn't be there. Battlefest is more dice than I ever want to roll again, and Chris agrees. At GenCon next year we'll stand on the sidelines and cheer.
The boys from the High Country made it home safely and even shaved some time off the trip. We made 1,228 miles in under 18 hours but are completely exhausted. I'll post a recap of the Saturday and Sunday games in a while. First, I need to find some real food! Three days of convention center chow leaves you feeling hollow, and I drank way too much Pepsi. The sugar-high is going to last me a week.

I and my support staff (thanks to my wife and son for all their help in getting me to Origins in one piece each day) made it back safely about 2 hours ago. It was great meeting all the folks at Origins and a special thanks to Joe, Chris, and Steve for helping out where I was stretched thin. It really takes one person running tourneys and one running demos sometimes. I'll try to get the winning armies from all the tourneys posted this week.
Now to get ready to go to work tomorrow so I can pay for this trip and get ready to go to GENCON. _________________ Michael DeZearn

OK, I'm off to Disney in about eight hours (my wife is driving the first shift), but here are a few quick comments about Origins.
1) The registration process stunk. (See post elsewhere.)
2) The con itself was great! I had enough events to keep me happy, plenty of time to overspend in the dealer's room, and way too much fun (especially Saturday night, but that's a story for later).
3) My sons also really enjoyed themselves. I think out of the whole crew Jonathan may just have had the absolute best time. (His final event? Live action role playing chess. He was the last one killed.)
4) The best part was meeting everyone. I must warn you all, after meeting Joe, that we are even more alike than I thought from our online interaction. And, after our discussions out there, you can all be glad we live 1800 miles apart, or we would make the current S&JW seem positively sane and normal. Joe, Chris, and Jake roomed with us, much to the chagrin of our neighbors at the Holiday Inn, and we just had a great time. It was also a real pleasure to meet Mike D. and Steve (wuxia), as well as other DD players.
5) I spent way too much money, and SFR wasn't even there. But I did buy a lot of dice-although I passed on the fossil megalodon teeth dice by Crystal Caste. Guess that means fewer mouse ears for Daddy.
6) I also enjoyed my non-DD events, but that would make this post off-topic. Those were the only ones I placed in, though.
7) There are a lot of people who used to play DD out there, many of whom still have their dice and may want to get back into it. Distribution can't come too soon (and it is coming).
8 ) The time was far too short, and the con was far too much fun. I hated to leave, even with the rest of my vacation ahead of me.
9) I bought my 6-year-old daughter a plush d4. She now wants to "play dice" with us all the time, and makes up her own games. She even packed it to take with her in the car on our ride to Florida, Yes, the next generation is hooked.
10) That picture was too for Anna, Joe-and she loved it!
I'll post some more about it when we get back. I do need to catch up on a little sleep... _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

It's nice to have you all back here again. Everybody returned safely but I can imagine that the journey itself (18 hrs of driving) must have been a torture.
But a DD fan can take a lot to get where he/she can play, right??
And listening to your stories and reports shows that it was worth it. _________________

I'm Chris, or RockyMtnGamer , thanks to Joe, for getting me into DDice, ( he says snidely). But going to Origins was a great time. It was great to meet Steve and his boys, Mike, Scott and other Dragon Dicers. Even though there was an 18 hour drive (x2). We are planning to be at GenCon 2006. What fun that will be. |
