I was just wondering what you folks are thinking when you put together 2 18 pt. armies for a 36 point constructed, for whatever strat. I suppose I can keep this a running thread with various scenarios.

The first scanario is....

36 points of x race that does not have GOLD inherently.

When you build an army around this, what would you do and why?

(We are assuming you have NO idea what your opponent will be bringing/doing, and they may or may not bring a race that has included gold)

If you make no assumptions on what your opponent is bringing, then you can either ignore them and focus 100% on offense or you can design around a defense that works equally well.

this is one reason I like the combination of red and black magic. They are both offensive with direct damage and they can defend equally against other armies, either with palsy or ashstorm or open grave.

there are other colors that can defend better against specific armies, but that isn't the situation.

similarly, something with wildgrowth or regenerate works equally well if you assume your opponent will be doing SOME type of damage against you.

I have been taking a liking to the Fire walkers lately. This probably has alot to do with my last Ebay pull landing me 3 pheonix's. Anyways I love Terrain flight, mixed with red and blue magic. I made an army more magic/missle focused. Wind walks, lightning bolts, dancing lights, were all spells i used frequently. And with the reliability of Firewalker mages at a wasteland i would land 15-21 points of magic on average. This was a 36 point army. No magic items, dragon kin, or eldarim Champs.

Nice, Terrain flight DEFINITELY helps when you dont have access to path.

I suppose I should have been more loose on my scenario. I meant 'primarily' single race.
For me, Path is very essential. If I dont inherently have it on a race I am playing, Ill bring terrain hopping in one form or another.

I really do like adding a genie with my coral elf mages and a Griffon with my coral elf calv. When I do grab that 8th face and I take my magic action, this very much can do it for me. They are hard to kill on coast land, do great magic. Blue/green is not a bad combo at all and with their racial spell to bury its a killer setup.

With Undead, I do take roughly 6 pts. of goblin mages. This adds path and a very powerful spirit furnace. Folks might say its a last ditch effort, but I feel if your using Undead thats not the case, it becomes a very fierce strat.

Ok, heres another one. (Again this is under the same assumption that you have no idea what lurks behind the shield, as all of these are).

Scenario 2, so you dont have access to Direct Damage spells. This could be Scalders, Treefolk, Dwarves, amazons on a highland/swampland/feyland or maybe you are building an army with the intention to not need (or use) it.

Then your choices are
a) do damage with melee/missile
b) don't worry about attacking; focus on maneuvers & saves and/or path to victory

Basically, it is the same advice that Cliff gave above.

I guess though, Pi, in the spirit of the post, if your next game you planned on not using Direct Damage spells, what you would build, and why?

I think I would go goblins, but 9 points of magic and 9 points of calv as my horde because gobbo mages have some movement. But then for the other 18 points I would go heavy melee and put them on my home. Then I would hyper focus on my home terrain, unless some other situation put me in a crunch.

Hard to say since I usually do know what is behind the other screens (the local metagame as it were).

If I were to play against a new set of people, I would probably go half mage and half cavalry and/or melee. Scalders would probably be one of my first choices (I just like 'em, and scorching touch can be fun). Frostwings (open grave, wind walk, fly) or Treefolk (path to victory, flooded path to victory) would also catch my eye.

I say, make a focused army.
Let the matchup fall as it will...
if your army is focused you then exploit its strenghts.

Drowning in your armor.
This happens when you overthink.

This makes me so jealous. 26 packs with no Pheonix's for me, and I don't have much worth trading that wouldn't leave a big hole in my collection. Someday, I'll pursue those Pheonix's again...

You can redeem yourself and send me one of those Phoenixes. I'll send you two Gorgons in return. That's 2 monsters for 1! >_>

Or you can listen to what Cliff said. You're not a year late Wink. I'm hearing of a lot of Phoenix pulls lately. Apparently they're offsetting the bad luck I've had.
