Hi there,
I've recently received my latest order, which finally set me with all I need for actually playing this game (vs. petting the dice...).
My last order, then, was of 20 feral/undead starters + 20 scalder kickers.
I also own several firewalkers (more than you'd ever need, I'd say).
So, I'm going to list only my rare/monster dice as I suppose I have enough of the uncommon/common ones.
Here it is my list:
Feral:
Bear-Folk: 3
Elephant-Folk : 3
Lion-Folk: 2
Owl-Folk: 9
Rhino-Folk: 3
Tiger-Folk: 7
Wolf-Folk: 4
Buffalo-Folk: 5
Vulture-Folk: nil!
Wolverine-Folk: 4
Undead:
Carrion Crawler: 4
Dracolich: 4
Fenhound: 6
Minor Death: 3
Skeletal Steed: 3
Mummy: 0 (sigh)
Death Knight: 8
Ghost: 5
Vampire: 6
Lich: 1 (doh!)
(I thought rares of these two races had flat rarity, isn't it?)
FireWalkers:
seriously there's no need to list them, I've at least 5 of each of the monster/rare dice.
Scalders:
Ettercap: 6
Quickling: 6
Unseelie Faerie: 1 (it was hidden in the very last kicker I've opened
Web Birds: 2
Will o Wisps: 5
Searer: 3
Charkin: 5
Dragonne Knight: 5
Blazer: 6
Inferno: 1
Now, the thing is I've never played a single match up to now.
I don't really know how to build the army out of what I have, and I'd need to prepare a couple of armies to try it out with wife or friends. If you can help me preparing a couple of balanced army it would be great.
If you include tactic suggestions or the like, it would be even better!
What I'd like to start with are ferals (my son likes them the most: "I like their name" he said. But we are italian, the name itself doesn't really mean anything to him . He's 4 btw ) and FireWalkers (they've been waiting this moment for so long now, they deserve to get involved in the very first battle )
Thanks in advance,
Danilo |

If you want to start at a very, very basic level, I'd suggest going for a 12/12/12 setup for both sides, taking 12 health of melee, missile and magic units for each player. This is hardly the most strategic approach to the game, but it does enable you to experience a broader range of options. For health, I suggest only using one or two 3-health units per player, preferably ones with the Smite or Bullseye SAI, as they are relatively basic and straightforward. I'd skip the monsters for the first game. For the second game, I would ad a bit of strategy and go for the (in no particular order) 18/17/1 setup and introduce a monster on both sides.
As for picking specific dice: it really doesn't matter all that much. Perhaps you could make one of the Firewalker armies consists only of 2 health units to get familiar with excess damage, and have the Feral be nicely stepped in order to make the most out of Feralization.
I hope this helps you get started. Good luck and have fun!

OK, thanks DialF - ForTheReply (ok,ok, that's a bad joke ).
You may want to consider that I've only "followed" DD matches via this very forum, in the online game section, so I may not understand the whole story you may left untold here...
So, I'll add some specific questions now, following your reply:
I think I got the 12/12/12 health thing, but do you also mean to put three 12-health army at the various terrains in the setup? Each of them being 4/4/4 or 12/0/0, 0/12/0, 0/0/12 ?
But anyway, when I'll move on to the 18/17/1 (with which you mean army dislocation at terrains right? 18@home, 17@horde, 1@frontier, right?) again should I go for 30%/30%/30% ?
Bah, most probably the best thing is playing out the game, but I haven't had any chance up to now. Life's taking priority..
Thanks again,
Danilo |

I'm not entirely sure if I understood your questions about the health, so I made some quick examples:
Game 1: (before rol-off, so there is an extra frontier. I accidentally switched up the home terrains.)

As you can see, I've made three 12 point armies on both sides, each one centred around one type of action (magic, missile, melee). The placement of these armies was kind of random. I only indluded 2 'rares' as this limits the amount of time spent on looking up SAIs.
I took the forces I used in game 1, but they are quite sub-optimal this way as I mixed up the melee, magic and missile components. I replaced 4 health on both sides with a monster. This board was intended mainly to give two examples of the 18/17/1 setup.

Thanks again DialF,
I sort of got what you meant the first time, but, you know, an image is worth 10000 words. In fact I've now perfectly understood what you mean.
I've started a match yesterday, but we had to stop it very soon for "outer" problems.
Figuring out that tactic and strategy won't really take part in our first matches (for our limited knowledge) I've just grabbed what I would find in two hypothetical Firewalkers/Feral starters: 2 monsters, 2 rares, 6 uncommon, 10 common per race (randomly chose from their bags...) plus some terrain and 4 dragons.
I chose the dragons color to match the races and more or less also the terrains were chosen with the same criterion.
As far as SAI icons and monsters ability, I don't think they'll represent a problem since I've also printed (and laminated) 4 intermediate playmats (these http://sfr-inc.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2553 of the 4 races I have dice of) and they are a great help in this regard. In fact I don't think it's a problem to start with rares and monster just because we have the full list of useful thing directly where we roll the dice on!
Thank to those who created those playmat and made them available, they really helps you get into this game.
BTW I spent less than 6.50 euros to print (in b/w) and laminate 4 of them, so it's also a really cheap addition to the game that is worth much more!

I'm going to call out that you can thanks MissTiffany for those. They have been her 'labor of love' as it takes a lot of time and effort and she got nothing out of it. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

Well, thank you Miss Tiffany, then!
They are of great value for those who are starting with the game like me. |
