OK, the lone Apparition goes into my DUA!
My turn starts:
1st MARCH:
Attempt maneuver at your deserted homeland, you can't counter-maneuver. Bringing in a minor Coastland Bridge.
Rolling minor terrain (roll, roll)-----> it shows "double maneuvers"
Major terrain stays on 4, missile.
First march ended.
2nd MARCH:
Attempting maneuver at frontier terrain, you can't counter, turning terrain up on face 4, missile.
Missile attack on your army at my home terrain: (roll, roll) ---> Vampire ID and Heucuva ID = total of 5 missile points.
(Hmmmm, I guess I made a tactical mistake in this turn, but we'll see.... ) _________________

Just didn't want to ignore the missile icon on the terrain die . Wait, I'll be back! But first I'll make my reserve phase:
Pulling everything back into reserves, except 2 Skeletons and 1 Apparition which stay at your home terrain. Frontier terrain is without any army now.

Rolling minor terrain at your home:--> it shows "doubling maneuvers"
1st March:
Maneuvering your home terrain down to 3, missile.
2nd March:
Rolling Reserves for magic: (roll, roll) --> 2 icons from Heucuva, 3 from Vampire, 3 from second Vampire, 2 from Apparition, that makes a total of 10 points of magic.
I use them to cast 3x "Reanimate Dead" (= 3 x 3; 1 point expires unused) to bring back my Heucuva and Apparition to the casting army (reserves)!.
Reserve phase: Moving all units from reserves to my home terrain (I told you I'd be back ). The units at your home terrain stay where they are.
End of my turn! _________________

Yawn! It's 2:00 am and I couldn't sleep!
So I decided to take a look at the game
Yep, I want to counter-maneuver but 14 is hard to beat! I'll try:
(roll, roll) ----> I knew it! Vampire ID, Heucuva ID and three icons from a Spectre for a total of 8! You've won the maneuver! _________________

Brad captures Die(ter)'s home terrain! I'll cast magic. (roll) I got 10 points of ID and 7 magic icons. I'll take all of it as blue magic, allowing me to double the IDs for a total of 27 points of blue magic. I'll cast Summon Dragonkin five times and Lightning Strike twice. I'll summon two Dragontroops and the Dragonspy first, then Lightning Strike both of your Minor Deaths.
After those spells are resolved, I will end my turn. |

Well, let's see if my Monsters can save!
No, they can't! Both go to the DUA and I need a coffee! What a great beginning at 5:55 am in the morning! Moan!
Spells are resolved, your turn ends.
My first march:
Rolling minor terrain--> magic
Maneuvering your home terrain up onto 4, missile again.
I'll cast magic (roll, roll) and get 1 ID and 2 magic from the Apparition for a total of 3 magic points.
I cast 1x Palsy onto your army at my home.
Second March:
Meelee attack onto your army at my home terrain.
Rolling...............
one of my baddest melee rolls ever with this army! Total of 8 icons from both my Vampires and an Apparition!!

Ok, rolling my army for saves (roll roll) Wow, my Fireshadow finally did something useful! 4 points worth of Counter SAI from the Fireshadow plus 7 points of ID and 2 save icons. Also get 5 points of automatic saves from my dragonkin. So, you take 4 points of damage. 13 save results minus one for the Palsy spell gives 12 results; double that to 24 for controlling the eighth face; then add 5 autosaves from dragonkin gives me 29 saves total. After you take your damage, I'll roll my counter-attack  |

Rolling for counter-attack (roll roll) Got Create Fireminions, 10 ID icons, 7 melee icons, and 4 Firewalker save icons. 21 melee results minus one for the Palsy is 20 melee results; double the save icons for the 8th face and add them to the melee results for the Firewalker's racial ability gives a total of 28 melee results. Now you know why the Firewalkers are known as the "Tiny Terrors"  |

Great rolls! Let's see: (BTW, I totally forgot about the saves--->melee ability!!
Rolling for saves ---> Great! Now I get three Vampires with Converts!! They're useless now!
But I got Apparition ID, Vampire ID, Spectre ID, and 5 Saves from Spectre and Revenant. Total: 11
That hurts! I had better starts with this army!
So I have 17 Casualties! Ouch! Aren't you ashamed??

Now I tumble across the racial ability of the Undead. If I would bring a Heucuva into my DUA and bring back an Apparition (stepped damage), can I bring back the just died Heucuva by taking a Vampire into the DUA or can I only use those dead units in my DUA which have been there when the attack accured?? (Which would mean that I could only use the Heucuva and the two Apparitions for stepped damage).
I used to play the latter version so far and I will do it now unless you can tell me something different, Brad. But I guess I can't use the just dying units since all units are supposed to die at the same time (simultaneously), right??
So:
1 Vampire goes into my DUA, bringing back the Heucuva.
Revenant + Heucuva go into my DUA, bringing back both Apparitions
Now there are no units left in my DUA except the two Minor Death, so I can't use further stepped damage??
3 Vampires and 1 Apparition go into my DUA.
Casualties from counter attack resolved!
Reserve phase: Retreating all units into reserves and removing Minor Terrain from your home terrain since there are none of my units left there! (It's taken out of the game) _________________

The damage from the Counter is a different action than the damage from the melee counter-attack. So anything that's in your DUA before the melee counter-attack is available to use for stepped damage. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

You did it correctly. Stepped Damage is the opposite of dragon promotion, it all happens at the same time in one step.
I recounted the 28 damage because the way it was worded was wierd, but it really was 28 damage. |

Thank you Chuck and Cliff for explaining the stepped damage rules. I always used to play it that way but sometimes I just get a little unsure about some of the rules. But it wouldn't make any sense the other way! So it's a good choice to use common sense!  _________________
