As a newb...defined that I have only played a couple small games with my 13yo son and am now playing one game online with a very patient player, I am starting to not necessarily feel overwhelmed by the rules, but am realizing that dang there's a lot going on.
I am trying to think of a game (maybe aside from actual D&D) where there are so many rules/game elements in play. In learning what might be comparative, I expect to feel better about my learning curve here. Axis and Allies comes to mind.

At first,
if you use the same dice,
you'll be able to learn the game alot easier.
Instead of looking at all the rules... of course you will still need to know them all...
but if you play with the same dice for awhile,
you will begin to find a groove in the game.
After that, branch off to a new race. |

I've only taken the time to play Dwarves and Coral Elves in single race armies so far.
And yes, I'm getting used to them. My son and I, when playing, are then introducing other elements to the game (dragons, minor terrains, magic items and we're coming along nicely. It did occur to me that on a very minimally comparable level it's like when you're playing someone in Magic and a new card appears that you don't know. More learning...
I am loving this game. Not sure whether it was a good thing or bad thing that I was two years into college and thus removed from my Talisman, D&D, Conquest of the Empire days when this game came out, or I might have crazy amounts of dice. _________________ 465 dice and counting...

The rulebook can be broken down into several smaller parts. The first section contains the basic game rules. I would suggest reviewing the turn sequence several times. Once you grasp that, the game will start to fall into place.
I would suggest, as Jim does above, that you play a specific army for your fist several games. That way you only need to learn a small number of the special action icons and spells. Use only the basic spells at first. That will give you a much smaller list to manage until you get comfortable with magic. As you gain familiarity with SAIs and spells, add new dice and races , but stick with just a few at a time.
I learned to play online by playing a single race army every week for 12 weeks. I only had to handle a few SAIs and spells each week, but by the time I was done I had a fair grasp of the overall game.
Don't use the expansion dice (magic items, minor terrains, special terrains, dragonkin), the Acolytes of Eldarim (a very specialized race), or hybrid and white dragons for a while. Dragon Dice can be a very satisfying game with just your basic units, terrains, and dragons for a very long time.
You might want to watch a video made by a Dragon Dice player to introduce the game to convention audiences: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1qsO1vIi2Y
Feel free to ask any and all questions here on the forum. There are many experienced players (including some of the SFR board members) who are happy to answer questions for you.
While it isn't any help now, there is a simple starter rules set in development. Given the priority of other projects, it will not likely be done soon, however. We have heard the questions, and are working to find answers the best we can. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Love the boards...been a lot of fun interacting with people that way.
The rules are being absorbed bit by bit...
The dice...I wanna use em now...I've grabbed a lot of dice in a short time and they're staring at me like ignored children.
For the time being, just gonna keep knowing what I know and keep adding to the knowledge.
