10 years ago I've played chess and studied those literature. In chess books you've got pictures of the board showing the position of the figures. An online game would look better if there are photos of the current situation. This is the reason why I have not read those game posts. - You have to read carefully from the beginning and keep in mind how the game is developing. It's like blind chess (= playing without figures; just by saying 1.) e2-e4 e7-e5 2.) ...)
I don't know how you are playing those games, do you also place dice played by your opponent in front of you (if you own them) to have an overview of the situation? If you have a digital camera you can take a photo. Sure it's an extra work, but it will help us bystanders.
Funny comments (as well as serious (post mortem) comments) are for me an improvement - If they are written in a different way (italic or another font). You need not read them if you just want to follow the game. (But I don't want to look them up somewhere else.)
You can also number the turns. |

Yes, during the game we place all dice on our table at home and follow every move (the opponents moves, too) by moving the dice.
If you don't own them, use pieces of paper, write the unit and rarity on it and off you go! (still better than not seeing what's going on)
Since you don't have to roll your opponent's dice, papers are OK. You always know how many and what kind of units are placed where.
If you don't have a certain die, then don't use it in your army.
Fotos are a nice idea but that would eat up web space since you would have to leave them in the web for future readers, too!! (not to mention forum space!)
We've had 59 posts in my first game and I guess at least 50 of them used for our game! You have to put the pics somewhere in the web to show them here and they must be of a certain size to recognize the dice (thumbnails aren't big enough!)!!
Imagine maybe 20 pics per game and per player! Now calculate that for a four player game!! You'd end up with hundreds of pictures on your webspace after just a few games!
BTW, I use the "Dragon Roost" on my battle ground as reserves and Dragons, Kins, minors etc. are placed off the board!
Nice idea but hardly to realize, I'm afraid! But it would be an option for an e-mail game, since you can delete the pics after the game. _________________

I have imaged 2 - 3 pics per entire game (not per player; and not 1024x768). If you look at a picture you can continue reading from that point on. You need no other pic for the next 5 - 10 posts; And you need not even recognize all details.
How about this:

I guess I have to refuse your suggestion just for your BUA example!!!
In fact, your table doesn't look bad!
Could you please tell me how you've found this page?? I didn't even know that this table exists!
And I don't know if we will be allowed to use the pics!?

Well, not quite zero, but certainly no large amounts of space more than most other posts. Die(ter), all he did was use the BBCodes for making a table. If you don't know how to do that, just click on the BBCode link that is under "Options" in the lower left corner any time you are entering a message. It takes you to a nice help page for all the BBCodes. The images are simply the little images that show up in your signature. The directory on the website is http://www.sfr-inc.com/bb/images/logos/ The names of each image is pretty easy to figure out. Only weird ones are the Scalder and Frostwings. The ones with no suffix are the originals, with "_r" are the reprints, and with "_p" are the promo versions. Also note that there are no spaces in the names, only underscores.
Hmm... Cliff was talking about doing something to learn PHP. Maybe a little tool that made making up the "playing board" a bit easier would be a cool little project. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

Yeah, I figured it out by looking into his post using the quote button.
And I found the picture links, too.
Maybe I'm just too tired by now (3:40 am), so I'll try it again tomorrow.
It's just a little confusing at first to figure out where to place the pics in the table code but now I know that it is simplier than it looks . _________________

Yes! You gave up after one hour? (Ok; it was 3:40 am) It took me twice the time to find out how it works and to finetune it. But once you have the code for that table, you need not write it again, - just change the background colors and insert the gifs. (Right-click on an image, copy the address and insert it (Control & v) between the img-tags.)

I don't know how a table should look like if more than two players are playing.
In this table-code there are just two units:
| Code: | [table]
[row] [col color=gainsboro]Reserve:
[col color=palegreen] [img]http://www.sfr-inc.com/bb/images/logos/leopard_rider.gif[/img]

[col color=antiquewhite] [img]http://www.sfr-inc.com/bb/images/logos/sunflare.gif[/img]

Note that there may not be a space between the img-tag and the http:...; So [img] http:... is wrong (because of the space).

I have taken 3 Terrain-jpgs from Chuck's homepage; Sorry, if this isn't welcome I will remove them again. (Normally I'm very careful if I link to pics from another page.) They are a too impressive anyway. |

When I "fought" with that table last night (assisted by a couple of beers ) I had the idea to enter the terrain dice, too! Thanx for taking care of that, autpost!
Maybe Chuck can add the pics of them into the image list so that they have the right size??
Magestorm!'s missing, too, as far as I noticed. _________________

1000 posts!; The first Millennium for Chuck.
Anyway, Terrains would look cooler if they are not as tiny as the other images; But those jpgs on Chuck's homepage are too huge. (Or am I wrong? In a 60-health game they would fit.) |

Are people still playing online games? re you using a table based approach or just text descriptions?
I'm learning Java more than I am PHP these days (Chuck, do you know if our server will run Java?)

Server-side Java? No. Perl and PHP are the only languages the server has installed. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

I'm trying to find a way to incorporate a timer for online games.
(PHP code)
for example, a player can have 3 days to make a move |

Just talking conceptually, you either make a modification to PHPBB to integrate something or you don't. I would want to NOT change it simply because it might prevent us from upgrading to a new version and I want to have zero risk of breaking the forum.
so the next step is a helper tool to generate the BBCode for table layout. that could be done in any language on any server really. BUT to make it really useful you would want to save the state of a game over the course of days. If you are doing that you may as well just play the game within that tool.
I suppose you could have the tool generate two pieces of information, a 'save' string that the user would have to store locally and reenter a few days later when they want to change the setup and the bbcode for the posting.
I guess my point is that its possible to make something to help, but its a fine line between making a tool and just making an online game. (which I did do in ASP once, complete with autogenerated rolls and result counting, but it was too slow to be used for real).
Would anyone be interested in a WYSIWYG tool for generating bbcode to post in forum games? It would take some effort to build so I want to make sure it would actually be used. |
