Many, many things that I do not know about the game. But Diggity Junior pointed out to me this morning that only Wyrms have treasure (12 sides is a lot to look at on a die).
It seems to me that one brings dragons into the game with the idea of attacking the opponent (knowing that of course any given dragon could be turned back on oneself).
Do you bring the Wyrm into the game hoping that you get lucky and you roll the treasure as opposed to your opponent rolling it?
Is there a deeper understanding that I'm missing? _________________ 465 dice and counting...

No, I bring wyrms because they have three tails (more than the drake), which means it is more likely to get rerolled and generate more damage. |

I bring Drakes when I fear that my Dragons will be used against me before I have set up my army properly. Wyrms have a bigger potential to be either useless or spectacular, making them a bit more opportunistic in playstyle. On the other hand, Drakes are a bit more consistent in generating damage, but they require more consistent magic input because they tend to fly away. I think both serve about equally well as an end-game strategy.

The difference is thus:
Drakes have no treasure, but they have Wing, which causes them to fly away when rolled.
Wyrms have no Wing, so they won't fly away. They also have an extra Tail side, so they are more likely to get rerolls. This is offset by the Treasure icon. |
