Firewalkers in dragon attack phase

During the melee action, firewalkers count Shields as melee. If you are in a dragon attack phase, can you use those Shields as melee instead of saves?

The rules for a dragon attack (army's response):

The army rolls a combination roll and applies any melee, missile, or save results generated by normal and special action icons.
Any SAI that generates melee, missile, saves or states it has an effect during a dragon attack is applied.

From this we see we are making one roll that can generate melee, missile or save results. The Firewalker racial states:
Quote:
Flaming Shields: When rolling for melee Firewalkers may count non-SAI and non-ID save results as melee results.

This means that Firewalkers, whenever they are rolling for melee, MAY count saves as melee. The key word here is "may". You can for example, take all your saves as melee, none of your saves as melee, or some part of your saves as melee.

Key mistake here: note that the Firewalker ability does NOT say "during a melee action". It says "whenever they are rolling for melee". Clearly that applies during a melee attack, a dragon attack, or any other time they are being rolled for melee, including individual rolls.

I took that wording off the last set of race sheets that I had printed out. I see that it's changed, so I'm going to have to review all my Race sheets to see what other changes may have taken place
