And in the distance, the Morehl hear a victory chant from the Trogs:
"O Canada! Our home and native land!..", And then thay fall doom to the onslaught of stones. _________________ Former Destroyer, son of Ddice

Since it was my child who inflicted such obnoxious ignominy on you, I suppose I should try to atone by providing some insight into how to make your army better.
1) Robert's Canadian Pelter army is a one-trick pony. It has been a surprisingly good trick (I never thought it would work as well as it does), but it is an odd construction. Trying to build an army specifically to counter it can be done (I did it, and rather impressively, with a 60 Glower army in a Battlefest format), but that won't necessarily give you a generally useful army. (Just let my 60 Glowers face a melee-heavy army and you'll see where they're weak!) So don't let this battle discourage you too much on that account.
2) I don't know if it's a function of your collection, but your army tries to do too much. You use a little bit of all five kinds of troops. Usually, you're better off to focus on doing a couple of things really well, as opposed to doing everything a little bit. With Morehl, I'd focus on magic and probably movement, stay in highlands (where my maneuvers count as saves), and try to run my way to a win. If you need more dice, buy a handful of common magic and cavalry units to pad your army.
3) When I was planning to play the Coral Elves, your army just screamed "LIGHTNING STRIKE ME AT WILL!" to me. The monsters are fun, and can be good if used judiciously, but if you're going to use a lot of big units make sure they all can save pretty well. The rule of thumb is that monsters need to save 50% of the time and rares 33% of the time to make Lightning too expensive to use effectively. This isn't a problem if you don't play against an army with blue magic, though.
4) You probably should have retreated sooner and tried to heal earlier. Since Robert was nowhere near the 8th face, he wasn't going to capture two anytime soon. If he had an 8th, you would have had to watch for a Path over to a high terrain, but you had time to heal. (As an aside, when playing Robert it's usually safe to assume he's not going to move as long as he's dominating the field from where he is.)
5) I like the fact, though, that at the end you didn't sulk off and retreat, but took your punishment like a man. In a tournament you might try for a desperate revival in reserves rather than fight, but this was a friendly game. We occasionally allow for "strategic retreats" in our campaign games, but that's usually for storyline purposes.
I'm sure others will give you more sage advice, but I hope this helps. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Thanks for the advice. This is the first real game I've played in years and I have much to learn again. I use to have some great strategies, but the years and the real world have caused me to forget a lot of what I learned. But fun is fun, and win or lose, I just love this game! Keep feeding me advice, I need to learn how to play this game well again! _________________ "If toast lands butter side down and cats always land on their feet, what would happen if you strapped butter toast to the back of a cat and dropped it off a building?" |

I'm coming in here way too late, but for the record I need to point out a problem with Deadlands in this game. Deadlands does not expire until the terrain facing is changed. _________________ You can never have too many dice.
