|
|
This scenario came up during GenCon 2014:
A Unicorn is rolling for a Dispel Magic SAI in response to magic cast that targeted the terrain the Unicorn was at. It rolls a Teleport SAI, so it fails to dispel the magic - but does the Teleport SAI trigger?
The short answer is: No
Under SAI resolution (pg 40), under e effect of these SAIs are dependent on the resolution of an action or event upon the component containing the Conditional SAI, it's army and/or terrain that component is located.
The describes when the die with the Conditional SAI can be rolled - in effect, as a response to a specific condition.
Dispel Magic:Conditional (see text)
Whenever any magic targets this unit, the army containing this unit and/or the terrain this unit occupies, you may roll this unit after all spells are announced but before any are resolved. If the Dispel Magic icon comes up, immediately negate all unresolved magic that applies to the target(s). Only one dispel attempt is made per unit and, if it fails, then all spell(s) are resolved normally.
So it is clear that if the Dispel Magic icon is not rolled, the magic cast will resolve normally.
Teleport: Normal (maneuver); Special (any action or non-maneuver avoidance roll) During a maneuver or maneuver avoidance roll, Teleport generates maneuver results. During any action or non-maneuver avoidance roll, the teleporting unit may immediately move itself and up to three health-worth of units in the army containing this unit to any terrain.
The Teleport SAI will not trigger during a Dispel Magic roll, because it is not an action, nor a non-maneuver avoidance roll. It is a Conditional roll, but the section describing Avoidance Rolls (pg 16) could be clarified to make this distinction.
The only other icon besides Dispel Magic that could conceivably have an effect during a Dispel Magic roll is the ID icon of a Group Monster (such as the Will o'Wisps), which would force a re-roll, since the effect of a Group Monster causes the ID icon to never be the final result.[/b] _________________ Daniel Burkley

The ID of a group monster also has no effect during a Dispel Magic roll. During a conditional roll, you are rolling for one icon result. All other results are ignored. That includes IDs. It's just about the only roll that ignores IDs so it's a bit confusing. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

I think it might be a good idea to change the description on page 21 for group monsters from "during any roll" to "during any non-conditional roll" for better clarification. _________________ Bryan Brauser
