The Coral Elf/Lava Elf combo seems to be the least favorite of the three (someday four) starters for playing in a Sealed Box event. So how would you go about playing them? It's OK to mention dice you'd like to find, but I'm thinking more of general strategy with the random army you get. What would be a disastrous box in your opinion (short of a totally flat rarity mix)?

Well the key to really using the CE/LE is to really know your units all round strengths and weaknesses, then planning accordingly. Seeing as the new starters will have one of each terrain type it's a no brainer you pick Coastland or Highland, depending on which 24 health you use from the 30 in box. I won't be buying any as I have an over stock of both. But I think we really over play the random nature of the CE/LE. As I have really been taking an in depth look at all the Races in the game, CE/LE are slightly off in icon spread but over all very playable if an newbie is willing to do their homework.

Besides even some of the other races have issues that make them to overly reliable but only in key ranges (Amazons in missile, Undead in melee, etc.) limiting their use out side those ranges unless again the player understands the over all ways the units can work together even under sealed Starter conditions.

Sure Eagle Knight is the CE best bet for saves out side the Coastland but even if you got say
Herald his Counter SAI and 6 move/saves at the Coast is very workable.

Really it is more the LE rares like the Conqueror that have unpredictable results. But again it comes down to luck. Either a big BANG (5 melee) Twisted Evil or a whimper (1 melee). Confused

But over all even a new player who takes the time to look over all their dice before the game should do well with the CE/LE Starter. I have yet to attend any cons or tourey, but I'm sure there must be a prep time before play starts. As long as "older" players are there to help a "newbie" anyone should be able to pull together a good (not great) army of CE/LE.

Then again I could be wrong. Rolling Eyes Worse case have some Dragonlords or Hunters for players to sub instead of the Monsters that come with the Starters.

I couldn't get this out of my head last night but I really needed the sleep.
Since the new starter are to be 30 health and 6 of that + 1 Dragon and 2 Terrains will have to stay in the box, maybe something along the lines of a chart would help newbies figure out the six out:

6 Health must be left in the box here's the choices:
A)6commons
B)4commons1uncommon
C)2commons2uncommons
D)3commons1rare
E)1common1uncommon1rare
F)2commons1monster
G)1uncommon1monster
H)2rares

That should be all the combos, so if the LE rare seems to risky, leave it in the box. Truthfully the new starters will be great in that way, they give a little tweak room to really get to know what will work or not. Option F or G would work for the CE/LE starter or E for the LE only. Random results can be minimized with careful selection of dice from the 30 health pool.

Actually, the new starters will have 36h (18h of each race). This is a change from the initial plan. But it does lead to a Sealed Box question-will it be play all 36h, or still a select 24h out of 36? I like the latter option, as it gives you some chance to customize your army, plus it takes a little of the risk of having the "wrong" dragons out.

not according to how Chuck has the new starter posted 2 races
4 common, 2 uncommon, 1 rare and 1 monster (x2 the health by 2 and you only get 30) 2 Dragons and 4 terrains (1 each HL CL FL SL)

chuckpint
Any statements from anyone but me, is not fact. Right now, I am the only official source on what will or will not be in these new starters.

so that is the disclosure

If the starters were 36 health (again I'm just speculating)
I would like to play 36 health right out of the box...

Playing 24 health from a 36 health pool would add more army construction options.
Teaching a new player how to play Dragon Dice would be easy with a
36 health army right out of the box,and it just seems like the natural way to play.

Sealed Box is an adventure,
it allows you to play with dice that you normally would not choose.

The skill you have as a Dragon Dice Player will be tested.
I would also like to see a random sealed box selection,
even furtherly testing the skill of a Dragon Dice player.(I like all the Starters equally)

Keeping to the Elves topic,
I like the Elves,Sprite Swarm is Great.
I like the Necromancer.
The Infiltrator on a Highland is great defense.

A basic spells.....
Lightning Strike,Ashes to Ashes,Finger of Death,Open Grave.

Wall of fog and Wind walk added to an
Eagle Rider and Wyvren Rider Army should work wonders.
This can be used at any terrain since the wings are not terrain related.

ooops sorry about that Embarassed

Lizard Riders on a Highland can be very quick.
They are quick, just not from the Elves race.
(I edited it out)

Not a problem. On topic the problem with elves is the LE units aren't as balanced as others, and CE has balanced units so they don't really mix well with the LE. Even the commons and uncommons for the LE are wacky.

I did win second place sealed box with the elves,
even though they are not matched,
basically I kept them separate at their respected terrains,
that seemed to be their strength.

Coastland Home
Highland Frontier
and one point horde unit

losing the horde roll gave me frontier choice

having a Coral Giant helped maintain the home terrain

Your opponent choosing to go first gave you the frontier choice. If they had let you go first then half your army wouldn't've saved very well.

true,
in that case, I would have gone first....
and most likely would have moved the frontier army to the reserves.

I ended up playing amazon swampies in the sealed. It was kinda a wierd combination, but I got enough cav units in amazon that it made a decent missile army for sealed
