| Undead racial ability wrote: | | Stepped Damage: Undead, when sent to the DUA for any reason, may instead be traded in for an Undead unit of lesser health from the DUA. |
Note that it says "for any reason".
So, when an undead unit is promoted, I should be able to step down the unit sent to the DUA, right?
For example: DUA contains a zombie, wight, and mummy. An army promotes a spectre to the mummy. Can I now activate the undead's stepped damage ability on the spectre and bring in the zombie? |

No, it says 'sent'. In a promotion it isn't sent, it goes willinging.
I'm sure that the glossary defines 'sent' somewhere, but as I don't read glossarys I can't say. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

| No, the word "sent" is not defined in the glossary or anywhere else in the rules. The word sent isn't used too often. When it is used, you can infer from its context that it means to move a die from one place to another. |

I understand the point you are making. The only way I know to resolve it is to say that moving a die from one place to another is different than exchanging two dice with eachother. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

Originally, it said "killed". I forget exactly why (I'm traveling for business and it's been a long day), but we decided to get away from using that term. So let me think about this, and perhaps we need to change this wording again.

The Soiled Ground spell is another place where it says "sent to the DUA". So any race could be impacted by this question.

Just to make sure I'm doing it right, here's another Question regarding stepped damage, which occured during my last game:
I cannot use units which just arrived in the DUA for stepped damage, right?
Example:
I got 2 common Undead units in my DUA.
During an attack, a rare and 2 uncommons get killed.
I CANNOT exchange the commons for the uncommons first and then - because now I have uncommons in my DUA - exchange 1 uncommon for the rare, right??
All kills during an attack and all following stepped damage happen simoultaneously, right? _________________

The last part is the most important, it's all simultaneous. Just to remind myself, I take all the units in the DUA and place together. Then I take all the ones I just killed and place together nearby. The ones that go into the DUA I place there (never to move again during this exchange), and at the same time the ones going back to the army go there. Then I'm never confused as to which ones are "used" and which are not. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

Ok, I've done some research into this wording. "killed" is used many places in the text. Basically it is used whenever a unit is sent to the DUA to account for damage or failure to make an avoidance roll. Both the Stepped Damage and Soiled Ground should be cases where a unit was "killed".
So unless someone can point out a problem with using "killed" instead of "sent to the DUA" for both Stepped Damage and Soiled Ground, I'm going to change both to say "killed".
Also read the Glossary (yes, you Cliff!) entry for kill/Killed. It currently reads:
Kill/Killed: These terms are synonymous with dead (i.e., a “unit that was killed” is the same thing as a “dead unit”). “Dead unit” is preferred, but “kill” or “killed” is used where it makes sense grammatically.
I think it should be updated to read:
Kill/Killed: Used to denote that exact moment when a unit takes damage or fails an avoidance roll and is sent to the DUA as a result. Note that units that are exchanged with units in the DUA (i.e. promotion) are not "killed". _________________ You can never have too many dice.

Assuming I ever read that text, it would make sense to me and close the whole that Pi found.
and to answer the next question, this is a clarification change and not a rule change, so no one can exploit this at Gencon this year _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

I propose we change the title of the Glossary to "Definitions and additional rules" so that Cliff will be forced to read it. |

Updated the rules to 2.2e, effective date of today July 20, 2008. So these rules are in effect for GenCon.
Changed Undead stepped damage to say "killed by any means" instead of "sent to the DUA for any reason".
Changed Soiled Ground to "killed" instead of "sent to the DUA".
Changed Glossary entry for Kill/Killed to: Used to denote that exact moment when a unit takes damage or fails an avoidance roll and is sent to the DUA as a result. Note that units that are exchanged with units in the DUA (i.e. promotion) are not "killed".
Unrelated change: Updated "Twelve-sided" under "Get to know your dice" to delete: " included in the Starter Set". Also added: "Dragons can be found in starters (single color black, blue, gold, green, red, and ivory), and as promotional dice (white, hybrid)."
This now reads:
Twelve-sided: The twelve-sided dice are called dragons. They come in two forms: drakes, which have wings, and wyrms, which are wingless. Dragons do not belong to a race. Dragons can be found in starters (single color black, blue, gold, green, red, and ivory), and as promotional dice (white, hybrid). _________________ You can never have too many dice.
