I was wondering if you guys were wanting to do anything for origins? I know its smaller and at an odd time of the year, but I know I would be willing to help run a demo booth...and my friend would help as well I think

SFR used to attend Origins every year, until the 'big bust'. for those who don't know the history, Gencon and Origins used to be 4 weeks apart and many gamers attended both. then one year Gencon moved their date closer and suddenly many gamers had to choose... guess which one they didn't choose?

so SFR lost money and our 'booth neighbor' went an entire day w/o a single customer.

Most of the exhibitors lost money, so the next year they didn't go back. The players did, but without exhibitors they were upset. so the year after that, neither showed.

That was several years ago and I have heard that it has picked back up, but it would still be a risk. Before we sunk a lot of money into getting a booth to sell product I think we should have someone attend to see what it is like. Or someone could try to run demo's/events and see what the player acceptance is like.

I know you can't sell from the event hall, but if there anything that says you can't let someone borrow a computer (on which they just happen to place an online order to be shipped after the con/or from a hotel room?)

so, are YOU planning on going to Origins? Did you go last year? How did it compare to Gencon last year?

I'm likely going to be on my tour of the midwest or just after my tour of the midwest, so I likely won't be able to take the vacation required to make it to Columbus that weekend.

however, technically.... the 'national' tournament is held at Origins and the last time it was held I won... so I've had the title for many years Wink

Would that be the US National title that's been held at DEXCON for a few years, now?

Yes, but I remember it differently.

I will be unable to attend Origins myself. They don't have detailed event listings up yet. Judging by the categories, they don't really have games like ours.

Anyone who is attending this year, I would like to talk to before and after to see what the show is like these days and if we are a fit or not.

I've gone three of the last four years, as well as to the last two years' GenCons and several DexCons / Dreamations. Origins is roughly half the size of GenCon these days, and the dealer's room tends to be fairly well attended. The event I usually work with (TerrorWerks) has fallen into an Origins slump in the last two years, but the owners attribute this more to the inferior prereg the con placing them in the Outer Darkness than in lack of interest or attendees. I also routinely attend Camarilla LARPs there, and they are also well attended by Camarilla members and new blood alike. Overall, I'd say the con is recovering well. What else would you like to know?

Well, dragon dice is not quite like anything else out there. It's close to a tcg, but also similar to boardgames... How are those types of companies doing?

ORIGINS is June 22-26, 2011, at Columbus, OH. That's right next to my bride's birthday. I'm having my doubts about being able to make that one. (And forget about bringing my bride - she supports my gaming hobby, but she won't go to any of them.)

Yes, chuck and I already decided we won't be able to make it. Either I will be on vacation or it will be the weekend after my vacation and I won't be able to take that much time off again.

Origins seems to have improved in several areas over the last few years. Attendance is roughly 10,500 last I have heard.

The interesting shift has been in board games. The dealer room seems to have more board game presence than ever before.

The board room ribbon sold out by Thursday night selling 1,200. They added another 300 ribbons that were again sold out on Fri.

The CCG crowd is way down. I'm not sure that would be your target audience.

Table top games are on the rapid increase. This is mostly attributed to CABS (Columbus area boardgame society) working with GAMA and Rio Grande Games to deliver a great experience.

Is it worth the price of a booth? Probably not. Organized play in high traffic areas are what draws peoples interest in a new game. Demo teams would certainly be a way to increase a player base.

By all means if you can demo there, please do. We can see if we can get one (or more) of the game store vendors to carry some Dragon Dice. That has worked well for us at PAX Prime and PAX East. So contact Dave (dproman) if you need support at Origins.

Anyone else going to Origins and interested in demoing? Near as I can tell I'd be the only one there, and I'm a little wary of doing it alone...

I might be able to on that saturday, what are the dates again? I also might have some one else also. Will there be a booth to do this at?

Sorry, thought you told me you weren't going. No, we don't have a booth, or much of anything. Just playing/demoing in high traffic areas, probably.

Are we aloud to do that? I know people have to pay for booths and space etc, would that get mad and tell us we aren't aloud to promote the game because we didn't pay for space? Do you know the legalities of this senario cliff, chuck?

I'm trying for 'plausible deny-ability', but its up to the con...

You can probably play anywhere, but you can't promote anywhere. its a fine line between players promoting a game and a company promoting its game.

Probably best not to bother. For every new player you might get, you might also make someone mad that you are there "plausibly denying" that you are promoing a game without paying what all the other vendors are paying to promo their games. I think we would want all the friends in this market that we could get.

So disregard earlier posts in this thread. Check. I'm still willing to meet up with anyone during some slow times and sling some dice. TerrorWerks usually sticks me on morning shifts, so I tend to be free after 1ish
