1st March:

No Maneuver.

Horde Army casts magic:

And apparently they forgot their Ruby Slippers cause we got nothin'.

2nd March:

We'll attempt the Maneuver at the Frontier:

7 total - 4 from the Sprite Swarm, 2 from a Trooper and 1 from a Fighter. So clearly that's no good.

I'll skip the Action.

Retreat:

We'll retreat the Coral Giant and Protector from the Horde.
We'll retreat the Enchanter, Conjuror and Evoker from the Home along with the Dragon Staff.

Done.

Excitedly...rolled save icon for Coral Giant.

First March:

Maneuver Home Terrain up to 6.
Bring in Grove

I don't think I can take an action since you have no units there, correct?
My thought being that the Grove won't be rolled unit I March on it next turn.

Second March:

Maneuver your Home Terrain (Highlands) up to 4.

No action.

Reinforce: All reserve Units to Home Terrain.
Retreat: All Frontier Units to Reserve.

Actually, it's a Knoll, not a Grove. Anytime you bring in a minor terrain, or take a march (note that a march consists of maneuver and/or action), you must roll it. However, you cannot turn a terrain up AND bring in a minor terrain. It's one or the other.

So if you want to bring in a minor terrain, the major terrain stays at 5. And then you roll the minor terrain. You can then take an action based on the major terrain, or if the minor terrain has an action showing, the action icon on the minor terrain.

The Grove reference was just my usual confusion, but thanks for the clarification on when to play it.

I guess I'll be redoing that March.

Also, my son and I will be looking to swing through Games-Plus on Thursday (just an adventure day out).

Thanks.

So we'll change the first March to a Maneuver of bringing in a Knoll which I then rolled for Double Maneuvers.

So still no action for me there.

If I rolled a magic or melee icon, do I then have a choice of actions to take: either the rolled on the minor terrain or the active action on the major?

Thanks.

Indeed, you get the choice between the rolled icon on the minor and the icon on the major terrain.

3 Things...

1. I'm reading the spell effect for Ash Storm and am not sure I fully get it, but I think it means that for every roll I make I lose a result (in this case 3). So for the combination roll versus the Dragon, I'm to lose some total of 3 saves (which I don't need since it "bellied") or "attack points". Then I would lose maneuvers, if I were being challenged...and so on.
2. We're resolving drake 1, I presume we then jump right to resolving drake 2...
3. "The Firestormer and Firemasters move to my home". I can't figure out why they don't move to your reserve area since it's a retreat.
4. If your second drake does damage (or the first one had), since I have double maneuvers due to the Knoll, that is in effect until I make my March, right?

Ah, questions, good!

2) The dragons are resolved simultaneously, so you roll your dragon as well, then your army tries to survive the attacks and do damage to the dragons. I rolled my dragon in advance to keep up the pace.

1) As for the ash storms: during a dragon attack, you get to 'choose what you lose', since you are rolling for saves, melee and missile. Suppose, for example, that you roll 5 saves, 3 missile and 5 melee, you can choose to apply the modifier to the missiles and still have plenty left to save against damage and possibly slay a dragon. If you had 5 melee, 2 missile and 5 saves, you could apply two storms to the missile result, and then apply the last one to either the saves or melee.
If, later during your turn, you want to cast magic (for example), you'll have to apply the modifier to your magic result.

3) The Firewalkers have the 'terrain flight' special rule which reads:
Quote:
Terrain Flight: During the retreat phase of the Reserve Movement, the Firewalkers may immediately move from any terrain with the blue (air) element to any other terrain.

This allows me to skip the reserves and immediately move to any terrain, in this case my home.

4) The effect of the Knoll is there until you take a march on the terrain, in which case the Knoll gets rolled again. So while fighting the dragons, you get the double maneuvers, which is quite useful with your racial ability (I didn't realize this until just now).

So I roll for my Drake (which I forgot you could summon my drake which is why I didn't understand why you rolled fo only one):

Tail for 3; reroll claw for 6 more for 9.

Roll army for combination roll:

Coral Giant rolls a Maneuver Icon for 4 saves (doubled to 8 due to Knoll). Does it double again b/c of Coastland and racial? If it doesn't We'll kill off the Evoker.

Evoker and Enchanter roll 5 magic (which does nothing, right?)

Archer rolls 3 missile (which won't be used via Ashstorm)

Dragon Staff rolled what looks like a Dawn Blade (4), Protector rolled 4 melee and Conjuror rolled 2 melee. 10 total melee.

OK...so you need to let me know if I'm all good on the saves or not. I then use 10 points to kill either drake (doesn't matter, right?). Not I would get to promote units, but I don't have any Uncommons in DUA to bring up, so the commons just stay there, right?

First March: My Horde

Maneuver Roll: One Bowman rolls for 1.

Action: Missile Attack: Two Bowman roll for 2 each (total 4). Evoker and third Bowman roll magic and maneuver.

Second March: Reserve Army

No Maneuver

Action: Cast Magic

Two fighters roll melee, Bowman rolls Maneuver, Trooper rolls Missile. Conjuror rolls 3 Magic, Sprite Swarm roll 4 Magic (total 7 Magic).

Cast Wall of Fog at your Home Terrain (curious as to opinion of that move as opposed to Dragon to the Frontier)

Retreat: Nothing
Reinforce: Sprite Swarm and Conjuror to my Home
All other units to my Horde.

I think that's it. Let me know if I have a dead Bowman due to dragon or if I have crazy saves.

The Coral Giant's 4 maneuvers double to 8. Then those maneuvers convert to saves. So you take 1 damage net.

Magic does nothing during a Dragon Attack roll.

So yes, you can kill either dragon and it doesn't really matter. Can't promote because all you have in the DUA are commons.

Before you roll for missile you need to announce your target. In this case it's obvious, but it's always good to point out. And the Ash Storms reduce your missile roll to 1.

Reserve magic can only be "friendly" magic. You cannot target any enemy units, armies, or DUA. You also cannot target any terrains. So Wall of Fog is not a valid spell to cast from reserves. You can bring back your dead units, or cast "buff" spells on your armies or units.

I'm using a missile attack from my Horde army to his Home army. I have that the Ash Storm is at my Home. It doesn't affect me out at my Horde does it?

And so then it's not "friendly" to summon a dragon either. OK.

One can cast magic from any terrain to another terrain or the reserve army, is that correct?

I guess I'll use my magic to bring the Bowman in the DUA back and the Evoker that just died from the dragon attack.

At the reinforce step: put the Evoker at my Home and the Bowman at my Horde.

I think that's everything.

This is fun, but tougher in the abstract without the dice in front of me for his units.

Sorry, misunderstood which army did what. Of course your horde army is not affected by the Ash Storm at your home.

Magic does not have a range, just a target. So you just have to have the appropriate target before you start casting.

And yes it's tougher to visualize the battlefield like this. So you really have to watch what is said as well as what is shown.

Glad you are having fun, so am I Smile. And you are doing pretty good for a beginner!
Dragon Dice has a 'fuzzy' ruleset which might be hard to fully wrap your head around initially. Even the veterans occasionally still discover new things or wrong assumptions. But once you got some games under your belt, you are pretty much set. Beyond that point, it comes down to knowing where to find stuff (which, in 50% of the cases, comes down to looking at the elusive glossary Razz) when corner cases or specific interactions come up.

Maneuver vs 1 Maneuver:

Result: 3 manuever, attempt opposed

Something has been on my mind about this game, and though I was a bit in doubt to mention this, it might be best to get it off my chest none the less. I feel like I've been playing a bit too brutal for a beginners match. I hope it hasn't affected your feelings about the game, but if it has, I want to apologize for that.
I wasn't sure at what level you were, as even though you mentioned to be a relative beginner, you appeared to me as already possessing a good bit of knowledge. Consider this a compliment though, as I do think you are doing great (oh, I remember my old learning games; among other things, 8th face marches could decide on the action after the roll...).
Even though this might sound a bit grim, I don't think all is bad. The rough ride will undoubtedly leave some learning impressions. Even though I don't want to call myself a good player (check Matthias Maccabeus for that, I played some very nice forum games against him), getting a decent example might just be really helpful to get a feel for the game. I just really hope that you feel the same way as well.

If you want, I can do some thorough post-game analysing (read: endless rambling because I always get too excited about the game Razz).

Hey, don't worry, he already showed up at a Windy City Bone Rollers meetup. We already showed him the savage side of the game... And he hasn't run screaming. I think he's doing fine as well.

Not going to go forward for a moment, because it looks like something got lost from my 7:41am post which was to move all my units out of the Reserve area. This probably got missed due to the fact that since I incorrectly cast the Wall of Fog. What I may not have communicated correctly was that in lieu of the Wall of Fog, I wanted to Breath of Life my two units in DUA and move Evoker to Home and Bowman to Horde.

This puts all my units split between Home and Horde. Sorry...

I show at Home:

Sprite Swarm
Coral Giant
Protector
2 Enchanters
Conjuror
Evoker
Archer
Green Dragonstaff

I show at Horde:

Trooper
4 Bowman
2 Fighter
1 Evoker
1 Green Dragonscout

Let me know how you want to proceed regarding the execution of your turns. Sorry.

I have to correct Chuck...I haven't been to a Windy event yet. Hope to some time. Will actually be going to Games-Plus this Thursday on a day out with my son.

As for the game being to tough on me...yes, I am a wildly new beginner, but having a great time trying to think of what the heck to do next while taking in what you're doing.

Play on I say...

Thanks for pointing out the oversight! It was there, I just missed it. I'll fix it right away.
Even though this might (or might not) have changed things, I'll keep my actions the same to keep it simple.
